WILD SOJOURN CORBETT NATATIONAL
PARK
Into the Wild
Wild sojourn in Corbett Nature is at its best here - the never-in- a-hurry river, the sudden cry of the unseen birds, the wild blossoms and the shy peacock. We follow the animal trail at Jim Corbett National Park.
Endowed with the enchanting wild and the lush green, Jim Corbett National Park boasts of everything which will make your weekend getaway a tour to paradise. Situated about 260 kms away from Delhi, the forest is a reclusive destination where nature is at its wild best.
Named after the legendary hunter turned conservationist, Jim Corbett, the
park is home to 50 species of mammals and over 550 species of birds. The first
ever wildlife reserve of India, it extends over an area of more than 500 sq
kms in the Himalayan foothills. Situated at the Patlidan valley of the Kumaon
range, Uttaranchal, the vegetation of the place is mixed deciduous, densely
covered with Sal trees. While the bushes of lantana weeds provide an excellent
cover for animals, Sal trees form a canopy under which the animals rest.
The alluvial stretch of land has Chaur grassland, a favourite fodder of deer.
To get a good look at the animals, you can take an elephant back safari with
an authorised mahaut guide through the Chaur grassland: the wild beasts are
often seen looking for food in this area. A brief stay at the park will introduce
you to the mysticism of nature and the secret of the woods. It is not surprising
to hear the roar of a Jeopard here at night or wake up to the call of peacocks.
The silence of the wild, occasionally broken by the howl of a wolf or the
song of a cuckoo will overwhelm you. There are numerous lodges inside the
park and your trip to the forest is taken care of by the state tourist department
officials. Open from November to June for public viewing, this place is a
bird watchers paradise. There is never a dull moment here as the antics of
animals will entertain you throughout your stay. Some of the species of birds
which will keep you enthralled are greylag, the barheaded goose, grepe, snipe,
sandpiper, gull, great pied hornbills, warblers, finches, and various wagtails.
You may also see parakeets, flycatchers, babblers, cuckoos, robins, and bulbuls.
Besides these beautiful birds, Jim Corbett National park has four species
of deer, namely, hog deer, sambhar, chital and the barking deer. Here you
may also come across herds of elephants relishing the delicate leaves of Sal
tree. The trumpet of these pachyderms will give you the feel of a jungle safari.
Though these “giants of the wild” are harmless creatures, yet you should avoid
making them angry when they are with their calves.
They are extremely possessive about them. An attempt to be close with the
younger ones will infuriate them and spoil your picture perfect moment. With
diverse flora and fauna, butterflies makes their presence felt at springtime.
This place is blessed with 111 species of colourful insects. You can catch
a glimpse of them while taking a walk in the jungle. The onset of March is
the ideal time to watch animals like cats, caracal, wild boars, bears, wild
dogs and jackals.
This wildlife sanctuary falls under the Project Tiger scheme and boasts of
the highest count of tigers. There are nearly about 10 tigers found every
square meter. Despite their high density, you have to be lucky to catch a
glimpse of this majestic feline. Even a night safari would make you wait for
hours to get a view of this ‘king of the wild’. Most of the time, you have
to be satisfied either by seeing their pugmarks near the river or scratches
on the tree trunks. You may see a tiger when it comes to a watering hole to
satiate its thirst during a moonlit night, but for that you have to be patient
and keep watch.
The crystal clear Ramganga River, which flows through the park, is its lifeline owing to its perennial nature. This water body will attract you with its rich Masheer population. This rich fresh water fish will make angling a fun experience. Use fly or small fish as bait and make your pricely catch. And if you are the type who likes to watch fishes swimming, sit beside the river on one of the rocks and watch them swimming towards you playfully. Moreover, you will fall in love with the rattling sound of the flowing water which seem§ to serenade the surrounding. You can even spend hours here searching for that artistic piece of pebble, a souvenir from the wild. A word of caution though, for an adventurous soul. The Ramganga River also has gharials (a long-nosed species of crocodile that kills human beings, so watch your move!
