DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
Home to the Chakhesangs and Pochuries. It is 145 km from Kohima. Colourful orchids grow wildly here. This area is also the habitat of Blyth’s Tragopan, a rare pheasant found in Nagaland. Chakhesangs are known for their wrestling and robust health. Their terrace fields carved out of the hill slopes are a sight to behold. It speaks of their engineering skills. The stones and pillars near Chesezumi on the Chazouba road tell tales of valour of the ancient Chakhesangs- who were formerly known as Eastern Angamis.
Tourist Attraction in Phek
PFUTSERO
This township built at an altitude of 2,133.60 metres is the coldest and highest town in the state. It is known for its green vegetables, such as, cabbages, spring onions, chives and garlic. Apples are also grown around this area. It is connected with Kohima by a 70 km border road. Nagaland State Transport buses ply on this road regularly. The Department has constructed a beautiful tourist lodge here which is yet to be commissioned.
KHEZAKENOMA VILLAGE
This village is believed to be the ancestral place of many of the southern Naga tribes. From here, further migrations into northern territories took place. Legend speaks of a slab of stone in this village which multiplied paddy when spread over it for drying. One day, while quarelling over as to whose turn it was, someone set fire on it. It exploded with a loud bang and the magic no longer held. The stone is still preserved. One can approach this village from Tadubi in Manipur or Pfutsero in Phek District. The department has a lodge here.
CHAKHESANG CULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
With a view to promoting and perpetuating the Chakhesang culture, which was on the decline due to the influence of modern culture, a few culturally conscious Chakhesangs got together and established the institute in 1992. This institute has been playing a pivotal role of a catalyst in research, celebration of the different festivals of the tribe and imparting training on the different aspects of culture. It is based at
Chetheba Town - 56 km northeast of Kohima.
MELURI
The headquarters of the Pochury tribe lies halfway on the important route to Mt Saramati in Kiphiri district. It is also on the way to Indo -Myanmar trade Centre at Avankhung and one can see many Myanmarese Nagas coming to shop in this township for their basic necessities. The place is also famous for locally manufactured brine salt and exquisite cane furniture, which comes from Reguri village. The ancient Pochuries were known for their hunting skills and were believed to have settled in their present site while on their hunting expedition as it was believed that rice flowed out from the hollows of a freshly cut bamboo which they had to chop to make bamboo mugs for satiating their thirst after chasing game for a long period. The Weziho Mini Cement plant is located in this Sub-division and one can see many interesting rock formations in this area.
SHILLOI LAKE
This lake, which is shaped like a footprint, is also called Lacham. It lies on the slopes of the Indo-Myanmar watershed in Phek District of Nagaland. This water body covers an area of 0.25 to 0.30 sq. km but is in decline due to deforestation of the catchment area. The average depth of the lake is likely to be four metres but at places, it is as deep as the length of a full large size bamboo pole. In the past, the lake was believed to be the abode of spirits by the locals. And they wove many eerie tales around it. Therefore, they did not use the water for drinking or irrigation. Nor did they fish in it. But all those beliefs are gone and now they use the water and angle for the lata fish that is found in abundance here. They have also recently introduced other species of fish as well. The water is dark grey, perhaps because of the silt adding to the mystery. Shilloi is about 300 km from Kohima and can be accessed by jeep, truck, or bus via Meluri.
