PEREN
Altitude: 1,445.36 metres
DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS
This is the district headquarters of the Zeliangrong and Kuki tribes and an important link between Haflong in Assam and Nagaland. It is situated at 1,445.36 metres and is 84 km from Dimapur. It is famous for the Zeliang dance. Zeliangrong area is famous for Rani Gaidinliu’s caves and sites where she took shelter during her resistance against the British Raj. The site of her permanent headquarters lies near Lalong village, not far from the tri-junction of Assam, Manipur and Nagaland.
Tourist Attraction in Paren
MOUNT PAUNA
This mountain, which is at the height of 2486 metres above sea level, is the highest peak in Peren district and is also the habitat of Blyth’s Tragopans. As it is not very far from Peren town, it is a good trekking and picnic spot.
POILWA
This Zeliang village is 52 km from Kohima and can be approached via Dzulekie. It has the remnants of the old culture such as the Morung or the Boys’ dormitory. Large wooden beds carved out from large trunks of trees can still be seen. It was mandatory for all unmarried young men to sleep in the morung. From here, they learned the art of survival and other societal norms. On the foothills of Poilwa village, between Poilwa and Benreu villages, one can see hundreds of stone erections, which were put in commemoration of the feasts of merit, to honour the death, lovers and other important occasions.
BENREU VILLAGE
This village, which is tucked away at 1950 metres above sea level, is famous for its culture and has produced many prominent citizens. It is an important tourist destination in the district. People walk the steep hills upto the village from their agricultural fields down in the valley carrying their head loads with great agility and speed. There is also a tourist village constructed by Tourism Department coming up here with eight cottages.

This little hamlet lies on the ancient British route to Kohima and is situated at an altitude of 1613 metres above sea level. There is still an old British Dak Bangalow which still is in a good condition for human habitation with its old world charm. Zeliangs performing their Nga-Ngai festival rituals
