ENCHANTING OOTY
Ooty enchants with its rolling hills and clear blue sky. The quaint town has a mystique charm.
When the scorching heat of the plains gets on to your nerves, what better
option but to take a break in the cooler hills. Down south, the Nilgiri hills
have been a favourite with vacationers for ages; the most popular hill destination
in the Nilgiri region is Ooty.
This small town is just 105 km by road from Coimbatore. A toy train also runs
between Bangalore and Ooty via Mysore. If you take the road to Ooty, you’ll
be surprised by the number of hair pin bends in this route. As you keep going
up the winding road, the heat and dust will make way for a cool and green
atmosphere. The Nilgiri region is well known for its eucalyptus forests and
teaestates. Rolling tea gardens make for an entrancing picture to take back
home. As you reach the town, the attire of the locals will catch your eye;
the original inhabitants of Ooty are the people from the Toda tribe.
The complete name of Ooty is Ootacamund and officially it is called Udhagamandalam.
Ooty has been a part of the domain of different dynasties. Before the British,
it was a part of the sultanat of Tipu Sultan. John Sullivan, the British governor
of neighbouring Coimbatore province, fell in love with the place and he started
buying many square kilometers of this place everyday from the people of the
Toda tribe for a nominal sum.
The pace of development increased in the hills under the British Raj. Ooty
also became the summer capital of the Madras Presidency. Thanks to its picturesque
locale, Ooty has been a favourite spot for film shoots. This also had a positive
impact on the hospitality sector. The properties are strategically located
and offer panoramic view of the town. One landmark that one can check out
is the Doddabetta Peak, considered to be the highest peak in the Nilgiris.
The place offers a telescopic view of Ooty town and tourists always flock
to this place. Close to this peak is the tea estate. Tourists can take a tour
of the gardens and witness how tea leaves are packaged. After a stint at the
tea factory, you can visit the botanical garden.
The massive garden is spread over 55 acres and is home to many rare species
of plants and trees. The Cork, Paper Bark and The Monkey Puzzle Tree are some
very rare trees that are found nowhere else in India. As the name suggests,
the Monkey Puzzle tree is so entangling that no monkey can risk climbing it.
There is also an Italian styled garden surrounding a clear pool. But the most
prized possession of this garden is a 20 million-year-old fossilised tree.
The history of the garden dates back to year 1847. Today, it is taken care
by the Horticulture Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Adjacent to
the garden is the Ooty Lake, a cool and tranquil spot shrouded by eucalyptus
plantation. Ooty has another star attraction and that is the sister museum
of Madam Tussaud, called the wax museum. It showcases wax statues of many
luminaries. There are many more adventure spots in and around Ooty town worth
visiting. Avalanche, Kalhatty Falls, Law’s Falls and Kattery Falls are a must-visit.
Avalanche is located 28 km from Ooty; the place is a nature’s abode as it
is home to lush green vegetation and rare species of birds. The road to Avalanche
has a stream alongside it which seems to follow you. This stream finally flows
into a lake at the destination. The foliage at Avalanche is so thick that
even sunlight cannot penetrate through it The place is under the control of
the Indian army so special permission is required to visit the place. Some
private resorts have also come up near the place offering ample opportunities
to tourists to partake in adventure activities.
Another not-to-be-missed place in the Nilgiri range is Mudumalai Wildlife
Sanctuary. ft is home to elephants, gaurs, tigers, panthers, spotted deers,
slothbears, wildboars etc. Birds like minivets, hombill and peacock also flock
this park. On the Ooty-Mysore road lies the Kalhatty Falls, a 70 mt. high
waterfall with a beautiful backdrop that makes it a very popular picnic spot.
Ooty is still frequented by many tourists from the European countries because
the place has still retained the vintage British culture that dominated the
social life of the town before independence.
The locales say that there are still 600 British families residing in Ooty
and that gets reflected in the club culture that still exists here. There
are many luxurious and comfortable resorts in Ooty and they organise special
theme parties and events to make the stay of the guests more comfortable.
