KHONOMA
This village, which lies 20 km West of Kohima was known for its fighting prowess in the past. It is also known for the fallow management of its alder trees, which regenerates the soil in a shorter span of time as it has a nitrogen fixing element in its roots and balances nature in the surrounding areas. The beautiful terraces, which are carved out of the hill slopes surrounding the village, are a sight to behold. These terraces grow over 40 types of paddy at different elevations. The Khonoma people fought a series of battles with the British intruders and finally in the famous battle of Khonoma in 1879 their resistance fell and they made peace with the British. In order to conserve the Blyth’s Tragopan, an endangered pheasant of the State and other wildlife in its natural habitat, Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNOTS) was set up in 1998 by the ecologically conscious people of Khonoma village. This sanctuary, which covers an area of over 50 sq. km now comes under Khonoma Green Village Project (KGP). It is privately owned and managed by the Khonoma Village Tourism Board as a Community conserved area. This sanctuary is also the habitat of many other endemic, endangered, vulnerable and rare species of plants and animals. The sanctuary is also an ideal place for adventure and nature study.
