BENGALURU
(Despite being an Information Technology hub, Bengaluru still retains
an old-world charm that gives this .city a distinct identity. Historic gardens
and cantonment clubs rub shoulders with upscale stores and spiffy cafes serving
a dose of tradition in a modern avatar.)
FRIDAY . Late evening - Grand entrance
Cruise into the spanking new Bengaluru International Airport and take a cab or a Volvo shuttle bus to reach your hotel. The two official airport cab operators Meru and Easy Cab charge Rs. 15 per km and will drop you off at your doorstep in comfortable sedans. The spacious and air-conditioned Volvo bus service connects to various locations in the city with fares ranging from Rs. 80 to Rs. 200 depending on the distance. In addition, a shared taxi service Airlift offers door-drop services for Rs. 300 per head to any point in the city.
SATURDAY 7:30 AM POWER BREAKFAST
Kickstart your day with a traditional buffet breakfast at hip South Indies. Enjoy the rava idlis and dosas with chutney and sambar and wash it all down with “degree” or piping hot coffee. You can even check your email using the restaurant’s Wi-fi.
9-00 AM - NATURE WALK
Bengaluru’s weather has its advantages. You can take a walk through one of the city’s largest lung spaces, Lalbagh, even if it is late morning. This beautifully laid out 240-acre garden was established by Mysore ruler Hyder Ali in 1760 and further developed by his son Tipu Sultan. Clamber up the Lalbagh Rock, a designated National Geological monument and one of the oldest rock formations on earth dating back to 3,000 million years and wander through the Glass Howse, a conservatory built as a replica of the Crystal Palace in London to commemorate the Prince of Wales’ visit to India in 1889. Lalbagh hosts gorgeous flower shows to celebrate Independence Day and Republic Day every year.
10:30 AM - TEMPLE BELLS
Visit the ancient and beautiful Bull Temple at Basavanagudi built in Dravidian style by Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bengaluru, in the 16th century, in honour of Nandi, the bull. Nandi, according to Hindu mythology, is considered to be the vehicle of Lord Shiva.
11:30 AM - DESI SHOPPING
To celebrate the earthy and natural, head to Desi. Located in an old house, Desi is a store that stocks items crafted by rural artisans in Karnataka and promotes sustainable living. Take your pick from beautiful natural dyed kurtas, traditional cotton saris or gorgeous terracotta jewellery.
1:00 - SEPIA LUNCH
Journey into the British Raj with a visit to Sahib Sindh Sultan. Elegantly modelled after a historic train, this restaurant serves Anglo-Indian inspired cuisine in antique silverware. Sip the delicate sandalwood flavoured Sultan Sherbet, try the flamboyant Thomson’s Atta Chicken and bridge centuries with the pineapple halwa with cake crumbs.
2:30-MALL RAT
Carouse the Forum Mall - the hippest in Bengaluru, complete with palm trees and Gold Class movie tickets. Browse books at Landmark, check out clothes at Khaddar and buy a woven dhurrie from Maspar.
2 : 30 PM - COFFEE BREAK
Head to Kalmane Coffee outlet located within the Forum Mall and take a break over the aromatic smell of roasted coffee beans that are sourced from coffee estates in Chickmanglur.
500 PM - MGS
Mahatma Gandhi Road, popularly know as MGs, used to be where the cool crowd hung out. Now there are hipper places and the metro rail construction overshadows the importance of this central Bengaluru road. Souvenir heaven, Cauvery, the state-owned handicrafts store stocks authentic and traditional sandalwood carvings, intricate metalwork and lavish silk scarves and tablecloths at fair prices. For more contemporary home decor and exquisite silver jewellery, albeit at higher rates, try the Bombay Store. Silkworm rearing in neighbouring Mysore finds favour here and silk saree stores such as Deepam and Vijayalakshmi Silks abound in the road.-For gold jewellery, try Jewels De Paragon. If books are your cup of tea, stop by the four-storied Gangarams or the quaint Premier Bookstore in neighbouring Church Street.
8:30 PM - CLUBBING BEFORE CURFEW
The infamous 11:30 pm curfew for all restaurants and pubs in Bengaluru (last order by 11 pm) ensures that dinner starts early, and Al fresco is the way to go.
SUNDAY: 7:30 AM - LIKE NEW YORK
Take a walk from the Cubbon Park entrance at Hudson Circle along with the morning joggers. Pass the Century Club where Winston Churchill still owes dues, the beautiful Public Library set amidst gardens and end your walk at the State’s seat of power, the majestically built Vidhan Soudha and its more modern mirror image, the Vikas Soudha.
9:00 AM - OF SAUSAGES AND STEW
Mingle with Bengaluru’s literati at Koshy’s Parade Cafe, an old world restaurant that serves a king-size breakfast - sausages, eggs and toast and appams and stew, all amidst intellectual discussions.
11:00 AM - BEADS AND BAUBLES
Commercial Street, the older but still vibrant shopping district, offers choices to suit any budget. Designer ghagras, tailored suits, perfumes from Dubai, tank tops from Bangkok or custom made gold jewellery - there is something for everyone. Check out smaller by lanes for trinkets, junk jewellery and foot wears.
2:00 PM - THE SUN KISSED BEACHES
Ride along the Konkan coast at Karavalli located in The Gateway Hotel. The restaurant is done uplike a conventional Mangalorean style home - lovely wooden beams, antiques from colonial times. A lush green garden with a pond and tropical fish adds to the coastal ambience. Try the kane or ladyfish fry, a Mangalorean speciality and the Kerala mutton curry or vegetable stew with the fluffy egg appams or neer dosas.
3:30 PM: CHOCOLATE WORLD!
Across the street from Karavalli is Corner House, an indigenous Bengaluru ice-cream chain. For piece of bliss, indulge in the house concoction “Death by Chocolate”, two scoops of chocolate ice-cream over a piece of rich chocolate cake topped with warm chocolate sauce, whipped cream and gooey honey - the perfect ending before heading to the airport.
