BAMBOO CRAFT
Naga culture is often termed as bamboo based culture and Nagas literally use bamboo for almost everything. They use bamboo material for construction of their houses. Bamboo strings are used for tying and stringing almost every household object. They make a hundred and one items with bamboo, such as, baskets, straps, hats, vats, mats, walls, furniture, musical instruments, plates, mugs, combs and even for cooking purposes while camping in the jungles, et al. Name any item and it will have some bamboo connection. And even the roots of bamboo are used for making decorative items and mementoes. Tender shoots of bamboo are used for making fermented bamboo shoot which is an essential ingredient of Naga cuisine. The newly set up Bamboo Mission has taken it up with a renewed dedication and zeal for value addition and to make it economically more viable and sustainable. It is also worth noting that Nagaland has a record number of bamboo species.
