ARNALA MAHARASHTRA
THE UNENDING BEACH, MAMMOTH FORT, WARM HOSPITALITY AND TIMELESSNESS
REIGN AT ARNALA,
To experience heaven on earth, you needn’t rush down south to the beaches and backwaters, or north to the mountains. Peace and tranquility and the delights of Mother nature will envelop you in Arnala. The drive lined with palm trees and the spectacular sights from the winding roads before you hit the beach, are spellbinding, to say the least.
The people here are warm and friendly and it is quite evident from their hospitality towards the guests or poune. The hospitality has taken some help from business acumen, and small family resorts have mushroomed around the long-stretched beach. The locals are primarily fisher folk surviving on the sea for a living. Arnala is a place where you lose track of time and pressures and deadlines seem like a thing of the past.
The swaying palms around the beach provide for shelter during the heavy showers that come announced. It is an ideal picnic spot for weekend revellers. The idyllic and romantic atmosphere of the beach attracts couples. But there is ample to do besides being one with nature. Take a leisurely dip in the sea, call for a fresh lime soda, a sev-puri or pani-puri, or just sit back watching children (and grown-ups alike!) trying their hand at making haphazard sand castles.
There is history encaged in the Arnala Fort that stands tall and erect next to the beach. It is also known as jaidurG or island fort as it is surrounded by water on all sides, and is approached from Arnala by boat. The main entrance to the bastion is on the northern side, while high and impregnable walls and gates guard the other three.
In 1516, a local chieftain in Gujarat, Sultan Mahmud Begda, first constructed this fort on the island is which strategically located at the mouth of the Vaitarna rsiver. In 1530, the fort was rebuilt by the Portuguese.
The Maratha ruler Bajirao Peshwa I conquered the fort and modified it in 1736 before the British took it over in 1781. On the way towards the main entrance, there is a temple of Kalikamata. One can can view the fort while walking on its strong ramparts. It takes about an hour to see the fort at ease. The boat service is not available during heavy rains, but if you manage to land on the island anyhow, be assured that your date with yourself and nature has just begun!
