Lakeland Finland
Talking of summers, another spot that you
can add to your itinerary is Lakeland. Located at the centre of Finland; it’s
the region of lakes and pine trees. The Great Lakes of Saimaa and Paijanne
are the most popular tourist destinations in this region. Not just lakes,
here you’ll find a gamut of water bodies like lake-lets, smooth curving bays
and rivers linking the water from various sources. Despite the overwhelming
predominance of lakes and forests, parts of Saimaa’s southern shores are undeniablyindustrial
and the most industrialised of them is Imatra.
A majestic waterfall popularly referred to as the ‘Niagara of Finland’ falls in this area. Lakeland also has a beautiful ridge called Punkaharju, that’s been bequeathed to Finland since the ice-age. In addition to the narrow ridge, Punkaharju has a large research forest and a protected nature reserve close to a forest museum called Lusto. The museum has restored everything pertaining to Finish forestry. Another attraction in the area is the Art Centre of Retretti, part of the centre is housed in caverns, literally blasted out of the living rock to provide 800 sq. meters of exhibition space. It has an underground concert hall as well that can accommodate up to 1000 spectators.
The annual Retretti art exhibition that features the work of four artists from different genres is a mega affair in Finland’s annual calendar of events. Amidst all the rich flora and fauna, there is a place in Saimaa called Savonlinna that boasts of a medieval castle, amazing spas and excellent lake sports amenities. A mega affair that happens in this part of the country is the annual International Opera festival; it takes place in the month of July and tickets for this event needs to be booked well in advance.
Paijanne is Finland’s longest and deepest lake - two of the most substantial towns Lahti and Jyvaskyla are located at the two opposite ends of the lake. Lahti lies 103 kms. of Helsinki, it straddles part of one of Finland’s most distinctive topographical features; Salpausselka an extensive ridge system is a regular venue for all major skiing championships. Jyvaskyla is the hub of educational and political affairs in Finland.
