Modernization of the age-old Indian diamond industry has been gathering momentum now. Some modern plants have come up and diversification in processing is being introduced by taking on sawn goods. Calcutta (Kolkata) subsequently a modern machinery section for demonstrating the latest in tools and technology has become a regular feature of all national gems and jewellery fairs and expos at Surat. The aim is to popularize modern machines and equipment for improved precious production. The DTC in particular, has encouraged and guided India to modernize the diamond industry. Its Research Department has also developed new devices like the Rotang and dust-filters.

The Australian Argyle organization also took interest in training Indian artisans to use modern equipment for polishing difficult rough, like that coming from the Argyle mines.

Another bright feather in traditional India's cap is the commissioning of a diamond processing factory near Surat, in which the up-to-date machinery installed has been manufactured entirely in India! Even the DTC has lauded this achievement. Another addition to India's modern industrial base is an advanced factory at Junagadh. One more ultra-modern processing factory has commenced working near Mumbai recently.
