India's first Diamond Institute for modern technical training and research is also functioning at Surat. Besides its other training faciliteis, the IDI has just started a modern jewellery designing and manufacturing training centre. The 101 celebrated its Silver Jubilee in October, 2002.
Unfortunately, like many other places of Gujarat, Surat was also hit by massive earthquake on January 26,2001 which caused extensive damage to life and property. The diamond sector suffered additional loss because a large number of workers left factories to rush to their villages. With global help and relief, the State is limping back to normalcy.
