The Panna diamond deposits occur in some formations of the Vindhyan super group. There are two primary Kimberlites that are intrusive into the Dhandradul Quartzite of the Kaimur Group. Another one has been found in the Bundelkhand Granite terrain about 100 kms. away. The one at Majhagawan is being mined as an open pit. Diamonds also occur in three conglomerate horizons associated with formations of the Rewa Group. All these conglomerate horizons in the past supported extensive mining, but remain practically unworked today. However, these conglomerates are by no means completely exhausted, experts opine.

Diamond bearing gravels occur almost all over the Panna field. One deep-seated gravel deposit at Ramkheria in the Bahgen river valley is now mined as an open-cast. Other gravels are situated on the Kaimur table only a metre or two deep. These are being worked in certain designated areas by local miners.

The Andhra Pradesh diamond occurrences are also of the same three types as in the Panna field, but each type Occurs in widely separated areas. At present, six kimberlite mines are known in the Vajrakarur- Lattayaram area in Anantpur district.
