The latest venture which India has undertaken is international trading in rough diamonds, which promises to develop into a flourishing trade, may be with more diamonds expected to be mined in India itself as the world giant De Beers has started diamond prospecting in India in several States and the Hindustan Diamond Co. Pvt. Ltd. has become its partner.

The Government of India may have been slow in granting facilities and adopting congenial policies previously, but lately it has cooperated and supported the forex earning gems and jewellery sector. It has been revising and streamlining many of its earlier policies.
Many public sector and private banks are also financing the Indian gems sector for exports.

Globalization of Diamond Industry:
Besides working wonders at home, Indian gems men, particularly diamantaires of the younger generation fanned out to achieve globalization, after successfully democratizing diamonds earlier, to make them available even to the common gems and jewellery lovers. They took small, low-priced diamonds produced in India to every corner of the world. To increase the availability of diamonds, Indian diamantaires not only went places for trading but have also established diamond cutting and polishing plants at various places all over the world. Thus, they have not only by-passed labour and tax related and other daunting problems encountered at some old centres but also exposed other regions of the world to the fascination of charming gems and lovely jewellery, which no more remain the exclusive privilege of the classes, but are now available to the masses as well.

In order to broad-base the diamond industry, Indian diamantaires have successfully undertaken globalization. Consequently, diamond cutting and polishing projects have been established by Indians in various countries like China, Thailand, Malaysia, Sri- Lanka, Indonesia, South Korea, and even Russia near the Arctic Circle. Canada is the next destination. No wonder India has deservingly earned the compliment - "The Sun Never Sets on Indian Diamonds !"
