Diamonds are found at several places in India but India's average production over the recent years has been meagre. Approximately two-third of the present production in the world is of the variety which can be cut and used in the gem industry. The bulk of world's diamond production comes from Australia, Russia and African countries. Australia, also enjoys a prominent position volume wise. Canada is the latest to join the major producers.

Russia is reputed to have over taken other producers in 2004. But India, only a small producer of natural diamonds, is the foremost producer of polished goods! With resources dwindling due to over-exploitation, India, the sole gem diamond producer of yore, has been overtaken by many subsequent producers like South Africa, Brazil, Australia, Russia, China, etc. But, rising like a colossus, India in its current second innings has re-emerged miraculously at the top in polished production, by establishing an industry which is many times larger than all other polishing works of the world taken together. Lately, India has commenced rough diamond trading too.
