Four wheeled Freedom
Public transport in India is reasonably efficient in the cities and covers large areas of the countryside; but the best way to get off the beaten track and really explore many areas is to go by jeep. You can follow centuries’ old caravan routes along the highest motorable roads in the world, soaking up the spectacular landscape of the Himalayan region; or drive through the forests of Madhya Pradesh and explore the sand dunes of western Rajasthan.
Some parts of the Himalayan region are inaccessible during the winter months, but the rest of the country, with its widely differing landscapes, can be explored all year round.
SHIPS OF THE DESERT
Travelling through the diverse landscape of Rajasthan has a magic that is unequalled. For centuries travellers have wondered at the forts and palaces, craggy, forested hills and spectacular dunes of the Thar Desert. Taking a camel safari is an excellent way to experience the environment as the spice traders did, centuries ago, with their caravans. These days, a trip to the desert cities of Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner almost always includes a chance to travel through the desert on a camel. Atypical camel safari covers about 16km each day and camp is set up at different places every night under clear, desert skies.
