LANGKAWI ISLAND RESORT- MALAYSIA
This lush tropical haven had been cursed with barrenness, according to legend, by a beauteous maiden, greviously wronged. Now, Langkawi blossoms as one of Malaysia’s prime island resorts. Lagoons and legends get equal billing in this cluster of 99 islands, of which only three are inhabited. Pulau Langkawi, the largest, is also the nucleus, and combines the sleepy laidback air of a provincial town with a modern, attractive international airport, stylish shops and swank hotels. It is also home to Kuah, the largest town, a demographer’s delight with a population of 11,000 and an interesting spread of tourist attractions. The statue of a huge red eagle, wings outstretched on the verge of flight watches over the islands, named, it is said, for this majestic predator.

Langkawi is believed to derive its name from the eagle or lang, short for helang. And in old Malay, kawi denotes reddish brown. "Langkawi is not just sea and sand," observed guide-escort John Goh, of Reliance Sightseeing. The attractions on land are as interesting as those in the water.

Determined to enjoy both with impartial delight, to start in-between at Underwate World, a marine experience which brought the pleasures of the deep right onto the land. Billed as Asia’s largest, this marine marvel hosts more than 5,000 different species of aquatic life in over 100 tanks. Even by the generally superior standards of Southeast Asian aquariums, Underwater World is a great experience. The vibrant denizens of the deep floated past us as we trod the 15 m long walk-through tunnel: neon hued or darkly shadowed, spotted or striped, parrot, zebra, sword or cat, the fish ranged from tiny slivers to mammoth sharks. Only 38 mm of tempered glass separated us from 198,000 gallons of water. A multitude of fish of every shape, size and color seemed drawn to an invisible pied piper. It was feeding time, and the fish knew it. Hazily a diver floated down, flippers a-flapping, and as the nosing, nudging creatures surrounded him, we could almost hear the jaws snap as the marine masses munched through their meal. A touch pool brought the piscean interaction even closer. Like the excited children around, we too reached out to touch and hold the living starfish and sea urchins.

Ocean Adventure
Boarding a luxurious air-conditioned catamaran at the bustling Kuah jetty, sailed across the emerald waters of the Straits of Malacca, to Pulau Pavar, Malaysia’s premier marine park. Here pristine water shelter one of the most spectacular coral gardens, in the Indian Ocean. The platform is owned and maintained by Langkawi Coral, an enterprise that conducts excursions to the park. After all, a shelf all around the platform had been created to get one’s feet wet, and view, even touch, the masses of fish that flitted fearlessly between one’s toes. And there was an underwater observatory too, where, safe and dry, one could watch the creatures of the sea go about their business unheeding of the rubber-suited earthlings who floated into their world. Adventure enough, wasn’t it, to feed tiny nibblers with special bread, to paddle in warm waters as clear as gin?

Mushrooms in psychedelic blue, orange and lilac, and endless processions of fish moved purposefully about sparing us not even a passing glance.

The day-long excursion includes a lavish multi-cuisine buffet lunch served on board the platform. The water here is regularly checked for pollution, and no fishing is allowed.

Kuah is a neat little township, sprinkled with gardens, lawns and stores crammed with imported merchandise. Shopping in Langkawi is the delightful topping on an already delicious piece of cake, since the entire island has been declared duty free. Cheek by jowl with sophisticated departmental stores laden with exotic perfumes, designer sunglasses, lingerie and liquor, small ordinary shops too hold shelf upon shelf of Arcopal crockery, Corning ovenware and RCA crystal. Cosmetics too, and chocolates and cigarettes. All at prices considerably lower than those at the duty-free shops at the Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur airports.

Crafts and Crocs
Just a 20-minute drive from Kuah takes one to the crafts cultural complex, where Malaysian handicrafts such as delicate batik, intricate silverware and exquisite handcrafted crystal are available for sale, just in case you’re not satiated at the duty free shops. Less expensive are the basketry, ceramic and wooden souvenirs, which make charming giveaways.

More beautiful and rare objects are on display at the Galleria Perdana, an exhibition of the various awards, souvenirs and gifts presented to the Malaysian prime minister.

Crocodile Adventure land is worth a visit. With over 1000 live crocodiles, the park is Malyasia’s largest. Here too may be found the longest python in the region, requiring 12 strong men to carry it! Shutterbugs will find photo-opportunities galore as crocodiles dance a "tango," or don boxing gloves to strike a knockout pose with you!

The Porosus exclusive shop, meanwhile offers handbags, purses, wallets, etc fashioned out of crocodile porosus, acknowledged as the best crocodile skm in the world. Each product is certified with a CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species) certificate to ensure its authenticity.

Driving up the wooded hills one evening, to the pier where the Asian cruise liners dock, we stopped at the Sangkar Ikan. Literally meaning fish cafe, this floating platform in the sea showed us how a colorful array of fish were bred commercially for the local market and restaurants. One can even have a go with a fishing line here, if the strong smell of fish isn’t a deterrent.

With 99 islands on the map, island-hopping takes on a very literal meaning in Langkawi. Beseiged by agents at the ferry station chanting "Island hopping, Island hopping?

A short boat ride take you south to a lushly forested isle famous for its "Lake of the Pregnant Maiden." While the outline of hills and rocks did resemble, with some imagination, the form of a pregnant woman lying on her back, the legend went beyond mundane geography. Apparently, a fairy princess who married an earthly prince had a child who died at birth. The fairy buried the child in the crystal clear waters of the lake, and blessed the waters, so that childless women who bathed here would soon conceive.

Another island, Pulau Singa Besar, a wildlife sanctuary, is home to monkeys, deer, iguanas and peacocks. We enjoyed a picnic on its pristine beaches, but for those who wish to stay overnight, camping equipment can be hired on the island.

Even without this smorgasbord of attractions, Langkawi would yet be a lovely place to visit. Afloat in waters that are warm and tranquil, the islands are a treasure trove of beautiful beaches. Casuarina shaded, soft sanded. The clear, warm waters are perfect for swimming, sailing or a host of water-sports. And if your interests are less energetic, there’s nothing more therapeutic, found, than gazing at the mesmeric movements of the waves.

If all this water doesn’t yet quench your thirst for activity, Aquabeat will. Malaysia’s first indoor water theme park covers four hectares. There are plenty of wet rides for those who can swim, while outdoor Jacuzzis make sure that those who cannot are not left high and dry.

Lazy beach days or activity packed excursions, sunset strolls or dizzy disco nights, Langkawi fits everyone’s holiday plan and pace and pocket.

How and Where
Located off the north-western coast of the Malaysian peninsula, Langkawi can be reached by air, road, rail, ferry or catamaran. Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia operate daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to the Langkawi International Airport, while Silk Air operates four flights a week from Singapore.

There are express rail services from Kuala Lumpur to Arau (approximately seven hours), and taxi services are available from there to Kuala Pillis/Kuala Kedar jetty. From here, one can take the express ferry to Kuah, the capital of Langkawi. By road, one can travel from Kuala Lumpur up to Kuala Perlis (528 km, sex-en hours) and take the ferry from there. The Super Star Express passenger vehicle catamaran from Butterworth takes approximately two hours 15 minutes.

ACCOMMODATION
While modern hotels and resorts provide deluxe amenities including swimming pools and fitness centers, chalets can be hired for those preferring a touch of rustic ambience. Guest houses and small hotels cater to the budget conscious. At the luxurious Awana Langkawi, with 175 spacious rooms, an ocean view double room costs RM 180 nett, inclusive of buffet breakfast.

The Federal Lodge, with specialty restaurants for Chinese, Italian and Japanese food, plus a wide range of facilities, charges RM 180 for a deluxe sea view room.

At Holiday Villa Langkawi, special packages begin at RM 170 per night, for a minimum stay of two nights, and include two free buffet dinners, free breakfasts for children below 12, etc.

Down the line, Hotel Central charges RM 79 for a double room, inclusive of breakfast for two.

The Langkasuka Resort tariff of RM 98 per night includes complimentaries like breakfast for two, use of gym, use of tennis court for an hour, fresh fruit platter, etc.

At the Delima Resort, a similar deal costs RM 78 per night. These tariffs were valid at the time of our visit.

Restaurants are aplenty, ranging from the plush Grove at the Sheraton Perdana Resort, and Chitose, at the Holiday Villa, to the more casual Cenang bistro and Kmgfisher Cafe. While Sari serves seafood, Wing Fung offers Chinese fare, and Saleem Nasi Lemak has a typical Malaysian menu. Briani House, we were told, serves Indian food. Discotheques, pubs, music lounges and karaoke bars are aplenty for the post-dark hours.

SHOPPING
Langkawi is a duty-free island, so shopping is both pleasurable and profitable. Everything is available here, from liquor and chocolates to crystal and couture wear.
