Buddhist Temple Tour to Bodhgaya India

Mahabodhi Temple, BodhgayaPrince Siddharthar achieved enlightenment at Bodhgaya meditating under the Bodhi or the Asvatta tree some 2500 years ago and came to be known as Lord Buddha. The city of Bodhgaya is revered as one of the major buddhist pilgrimage centers apart from the other sacred places of Lumbini where lord Buddha took his birth and Sarnath, the place of his first sermon located near Varanasi.

Surrounded by temples and visited by the religious monks and followers of Buddhism, the Tibetan pilgrims are seen flocking the sacred destination during the winter months. The temple architecture is in a typical square platform given strength to stand by four pillars around each corner. The great Mahabodhi temple has an image of the Buddha that dates back 1700 years in the Bhumisparsha Mudra touching the ground..Devoted scholars and pilgrims from around the world visit Bodhgaya to study Buddhism and the art of meditation, while few tourists simply come to pay homage to Lord Buddha.

Major Attractions

Mahabodhi Temple
Situated at the very place where lord Buddha got enlightenment, the Mahabodhi temple consists of a tower 179 ft in height. Visitors can find the status of Lord Buddha to the inner side of the sanctum along with a Shiva Linga to the center of the temple. Considered sacred to the Hindus also as it was believed by them that Lord Buddha was the 9th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Hindus believe that if the last rites are offered to the 'Akshayabat' or immortal banyan tree, in the vicinity of the Vishnupad,the soul of the dead finds place in the abode of heaven. The temple is believed to be standing on the site of a great shrine constructed by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BC.

Dharma Chakra
The Tibetan monastery takes great care of the massive Dharma Chakra or the wheel of law. The monks at these places perform vital discourses leading to the purification of the mind, the body and the soul following the principles laid down in the Buddhist scriptures.

Bodhi Tree
Bodhi Tree, BodhgayaThe famous Bodhi tree is considered to be the descendent of the original Bodhi tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Beside the tree lies a red sand stone that is thought to be the Vajrasana or the diamond throne on which Buddha sat during the period of attaining Nirvana. The tree is located just close to the temple, stands 80 feet in height and is said to be 115 years old. It is the important place from where the ten commandments had spread far and wide through out the world.

Parasnath Hill
Just 40 km far from the place of Bodhgaya lies the earliest Buddhist rock cut caves. In this historic place it is believed that almost all of the 22 'tirthankaras' of the Jain religion out of the 24 tirthankaras attained salvation here, and is deemed one of the most important pilgrim destination for the Jains.

Gaya
Situated on the shores of the Phalgu river, Gaya the holy place lies at a distance of 100 from the hills of Pretshila and the Ranshila. Gaya, a pilgrimage place for the Hindus and the Buddhist is believed to be the site where the footsteps of Lord Vishnu were inscribed and the temple of Vishnupad constructed by the Queen of Indore, Ahalyabai.

Barabar Cave
The exquisite caves of Barabar and Nagarjuni Hills, situated at a distance of 41 km from the place of Bodhgaya offers details of the life of the Lord Buddha from his early days. Among the seven rock cut hill caves, four are in the Barabar hills.

Shopping
Small decorative items associated with Buddhism like statues of Buddha made of various metals, sandalwood beads etc can be bought. Bodhgaya is a small town where such items are easily available in most of the shops.
