LESSER ADJUTANT (LEPTOPTILOSJUVANICUS),

South and SE Asia. Numbers small and failing. Mostly coastal mangrove and swamp forest. Of 67 sites it is reported in, 40 (67 percent) face some kind of threat. The species is an indicator of wetland health and needs to be monitored closely.

LESSER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (ANSER MYTHROPUS).

China. Scarcely reported during surveys for the Asian Wetlands Inventory. A large reported count of some 14,000 birds a Poyang Lake in January 1988 is doubtful. Exact status needs to be determined

LONG-TAILED PRIMA (PRINIA BURNESII).

Status and distribution much as for Jerdon’s Babbler.

MARBLED TEAL

Resident from southern Spain to NE Persia, Baluchistan and NW India. Rare winter visitor to the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, straggling to Rajasthan, Gujarat, Mahamsbura, Bengal and Assam. Requires to be surveyed to determine status.

MARSH BABBLER (PELLERNEUM PALUSTRE).

NE India. Swampy grasslands and floodplains wetlands. Uncommon. Habitat considerably disturbed and vanishing. Requires close monitoring.
Masked finfoot (Helivais Persana(a). Eastern India, Burma, Malaya, Thailand, Cambodia. Dense jangle swamps, mangroves and remote rivers. Habiat degredation appears to be the chief threat and needs to he averted,

MILKY STORK (MYCTERIA CINEMA).

Malaysia, Cambodia, Java, Sumatra. Of the 26 sites (mostly coastal wetlands) this species is known to occur in, 16 (62
percent) are reportedly threatened. Good numbers recently observed in Indonesia but there is considerable direct persecution. Frequents coastal tonsillitis,
mangroves and marshlands. Has suffered extensively due to military operations over its range in SE Asia. Large protected areas are the best her for the survival of this vulnerable species.

NORDMANN’S GREEN SHANK(TRINGAGUUIFER).

Breeds in NE Asia. Passage migrant and winters in Japan, China, Korea, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Borneo, Philppines and Thailand. Recent surveys in East an Southeast Asia have provided good information o this otherwise overlooked species. But it is not corn mon and requires to be monitored, at least in passag and wintering areas.

NORTHERN IBIS (GENSITTICUS EREMITA).

A highly endangered species. In recent historical times, this is one of the very few birds to have vanished completely from Europe. Today found in Turkey and
Morocco, in west Asia, and some other regions around the Red Sea. The total Moroccan population was estimated at 600 - 650 birds in 1975.

OKINAWA RAIL (RALFUS OKINAYSUI).

A threatened species. Restricted to the Yambant region in Japan. Population estimated me be more than 1,500 but threatened by the continuing, substantial deforestation.
