When To Go

The season is October to June, and peak timings are during the school summer holidays, Christmas and the Indian festival of Diwali. Mahabaleshwar closes down during the monsoons of July to September and only a few hotels stay open.ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE

Air and Rail
Mahabaleshwar is connected by road to nearby tourist centres and major towns. The nearest convenient airport and railhead is Pune, 122 km (77 miles) away (see p.309).

Road
MTDC operates direct buses from Bombay during the season either via Pune (290 km: 181 miles) or via Mahad (247 km: 154 miles)—book at the MTDC office, CDO Hutment, Madame Cama Road, Bombay (tel 2026713). Regular buses, and taxis are available from Pune.

GETTING AROUND
Mahabaleshwar has several miles of good road as well as a number of lovely walks. Ponies are available for hire, for the bridle-paths and gallops. It is essential to carry a map of all the main points and paths (available from Treacher & Co in the main bazaar). Alternatively, a guide can be hired for Rs100 a day.
