Travel and Medical Insurance

You don’t have to believe everything you hear about theft and illness in India, but you can’t afford to ignore it either. Good travel insurance is essential for your peace of mind, and has saved many travellers a lot of heartache. Take great care when choosing your policy, and always read the small print. A good travel insurance should give full cover of your possessions and health. In case of illness, it should provide for all medical costs, hospital benefits, permanent disabilities and the flight home. In case of theft or loss, it should recompense you for lost luggage, money and valuables, also for travel delay and personal liability. Most important (and this could be a life-saver) it should provide you with a 24-hour contact number in the event of medical emergencies.

If your own bank or insurance company hasn’t an adequate travel insurance scheme (they usually have), then try the comprehensive schemes offered by Trailfinders (tel 071-938 3939) or Jardine’s (tel 061-228 3742), or the Centurion Assistance policy (linked to Europ Assistance) offered by American Express (tel 0444 239900). Travel companies often include insurance in the cost of a luxury tour, but this is not always adequate. Indian Airlines normally take responsibility for domestic flight delays or cancellations, and recompense travellers (eventually) for any inconvenience caused.

Whichever insurance you buy, take a copy of the policy with you to India. Most important, keep a separate note of the 24-hour emergency number. Should anything be stolen a copy of the police report or FIR (First Information Report) should be asked for and retained. This is especially important if an item on a TBRE (Tourist Baggage Re-Export Form), issued by customs on entering the country, has been lost or stolen. A copy of the police report may also be required by your insurance company when making a claim.
