Bombay to Aurangabad 392 km (245 miles)

Air
One flight daily-IC492 from Bombay (Rs767) which continues to Jodhpur (Rs1480), Jaipur (Rs1503) and New Delhi (Rs1859). 1C491 follows the same route in reverse.

Rail
Long, awkward train journey (8/9 hours, change at Manmad). In high season, unless you have an Indrail Pass you are wise to reserve tickets up to 4 days in advance.

Road
Long, dusty 10-hour bus trip. Take a good book or an entrancing travelling companion. From Bombay’s State Transport bus-stand, your best options are the quick night buses: either the bumpy ‘local’ MTDC bus (dep 9.15 pm) or the two MRSTDC deluxe buses (dep 7.45 pm and 8.15 pm,). From Aurangabad, there are two good MTDC buses to Bombay—the local and the super-deluxe—both leaving 8.30 pm daily. Book tickets from MTDC Holiday Resort or from the central bus-stand.

Aurangabad to Ellora 29 km (18 miles)

Road
Daily conducted-tour buses—MTDC or 1TDC. Alternatively, local buses (every halfhour) or taxi day-return trips.

Aurangabad to Ajanta 106 km (66 miles)

Road
Daily conducted-tour buses—MTDC or 1TDC. Otherwise, local buses or taxi dayreturn trips.

From Bombay to Ajanta direct, there’s the train to Jalgaon (7 1/2 hours), then tonga Jalgaon bus-stand, and local bus to Ajanta (2 hours). To backtrack from Ajanta to Elora, there are regular buses daily, via Phulambari.

Continuations
From Aurangabad, the daily 1C492 flight heads into Rajasthan, landing at Udaipur )(, JRodhpsur 1(Rs214820) a1nd Jaipur (Rs1503), before hiting base at Delhi. To conect with the South India routes, take the 12-hour train from Aurangabad to Hyderabad.
