Weather Information Guide
Here’s a quick guide to the current ‘hot spots’ — where to go to get the maximum
Action from your favourite sports
For action sports enthusiasts inil Asia, there are two major weather factors to consider. Most important are the northeast monsoon winds, generated by high-pressure areas over Siberia and Mongolia. Less frequent, though more intense, are typhoons, which start from massive low-pressure areas in the Pacific, between the Philippines and Guam
Scuba Diving
Most dive operators are in good spirits as the start of the northeast monsoon means high season is coming up. It gets busy in Phuket, where liveaboard cruises to sites in the Andaman Sea get underway. In Bali, you can see whale sharks, mantas and mola mola.
Trekking & mountaineering
This is the peak time for trekking in Nepal – the air is clear and the vegetation is lush. The only downside is the trails are crowded. Japan and Korea are at their most beautiful as autumn brings out magnificent colours in the trees.
Surfing
Up to the end of October, it’s typhoon season, and there are serious winds hitting all of east Asia, from the Philippines up to Japan. Siargao is at its best right now, and in October it hosts a professional Australian tour event. As the southwest monsoon fades away, so do waves in southern Indonesia.
White water
Nepal’s rivers are still full from the summer rains, and also getting snow feed from the mountains. The only downside is that it’s starting to get cold. The rainstorms around this time bring water to rivers in the Philippines and Taiwan’s east coast.
Skiing
Right now, it’s too late to go skiing in most of Australasia, and still a couple of months before it gets good in Japan. The best choice right now is heliskiing in India, but the facilities can cope with few people, and it gets busy
Windsurfing
It’s just coming up to peak time for windsurfing. Most boardsailors in the Philippines, Hong Kong and Singapore are unpacking their sails and getting some practice – the real fun starts in December.
Rock climbing
As it gets cooler and less humid, climbers in the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong are heading for the walls. Krabi now starts to get busy. In Korea, it’s peak season on the slabs of Insubong and Suninbong.
Paragliding
Light wind days are still about in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where you can get good ridgelift. It’s good to get some flights in now, before winds get a bit too hairy in winter.
Mountain biking
Northern Thailand is ideal – the jungle covered mountains offer cool conditions and the trails are in good condition. Bali is also enjoyable, as the peak-season crowds drift away.
