Matheran

Matheran

Matheran on the Sahyadri (Western Ghats) range was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Povntz Malet, the then Collector of Thane district. He climbed the hill now known as One Tree Hill and liked the general area enough to subsequently have a house built for himself. This house, ‘The Byke’, was the first house to be built here. Matheran became a popular resort through the patronage of Lord Elphinstone, Governor of Bombay in the 1850s. Elphinstone visited in 1855 and chose a site for the bungalow, still known as ‘Elphinstone Lodge’.

WHEN TO GO

The season is October to May. Over the years, because of deforestation and global climatic change, there has been an appreciable increase in temperature and summers can be uncomfortably hot. The monsoon is quite heavy and by the third week of July when the rains slacken off, Matheran is at its prettiest, with the dark green mountains slashed by a number of freshets and waterfalls.
