Hotels in Periyar

Mid-range (US$10-35/Rs250-1000 per room night)
The Government Rest House in the forest has three rooms from Rs200 single to Rs300 double. Check availability with the tourist office in Kurnily . The plush Lake Palace (tel Kumily 24) is an island bungalow with nice gardens, a prime lake-shore situation, in the heart of the park, and pleasant rooms at Rs450 single, Rs600 double. Aranya Nivas Hotel (tel Kumily 23) is a fair fall-back with dodgy food, but good facilities. Rooms face the lake, and are reasonably priced at Rs150 single and Rs200 double.

Both can be advance-booked through the KTDC office in Trivandrum (tel 61132). If staying in the nearby village of Kumily (a short bike-ride from Thekkady; 3 km 1 2/3 miles from the lake), stay at Spice Village a new resort with well-furnished cottages from Rs 600 single, Rs800 double (book through the Casino Hotel, Cochin tel 340221, tlx 0885-6314, fax 0484-340001).

Budget (under Rs20 per room night)
Budget places include the Lake Queen Tourist Home opposite the tourist office (Rs50 single, Rs80 double), or Hotel Vanarani (tel Kumily 71) with excellent Rs75 singles, Rs200 doubles, and a dormitory. The Lake Queen has some nice 1st-floor rooms with views of the hills, but guests complain of the alarming 6.30 am ‘breakfast calls’. The Vanarani arranges boating, sightseeing, trekking, elephant-rides, and has a marvellous restaurant. The Ambadi (tel 11) at the checkpost, near the sanctuary entrance, offers well-furnished, homely cottages at Rs100 double, also 4-bed dormitory accommodation.

EATING OUT
The best eating places are in Kumily. Hotel Vanarani offers a fine range of south Indian cuisine, very cheaply; Hotel Paris is the best for Western food, with quick service; and Hotel Ambadi often lays on displays of Kathakali dance in its popular open-air restaurant. All the hotel restaurants are open to non-residents

GENERAL INFORMATION
Kumily tourist office is located at the top of the main street, opposite Lake Queen Hotel. When open, it dispenses boat-trip tickets, maps and walking/trekking permits. The Wildlife Preservation Office (tel 27) is at Periyar, overlooking the boat jetty.
