Snow to sing about - tune in and turn on to the world’s most popular heliskiing destination

Canada is a land rich in ski areas, but the biggest mountains - and most familiar images - come from the west, where Alberta and British Columbia (130 meet. BC is a mountain state: the Rocky Mountains extend up the easternmost edge of British Columbia, with offshoots and frontal ranges rippling out to meet the Coast Mountains in the west. As a result virtually the whole state is covered with mountains. Ironically despite the fact that British Columbia is one of the best known and best developed skiing regions in the world, there are Such vast numbers of skiable slopes here that many remain virtually untouched and unexplored - ideal conditions for helicopter skiing trips.

There’s plenty of snowfall and the Mountains are enveloped in blankets of pristine white from before Christmas until the early part of April or later. The runs are long and taxing on leg muscles, with some of the longest stretching down into the trees where the snow lies deep, crisp and not so even amongst the old-growth forest. Here, new tricks have to be learnt if you’re accustomed to Alpine-style pistes cleared all the way down to the cafe or cable car. And don’t forget British Columbia is just the beginning of Canada’s ski country.

There are probably more heliskiing operations in Canada than anywhere else, and many of those operate in the mountains between the Rockies and Vancouver, taking advantage of very skiable ranges in almost every direction. One thing’s for sure, you’ll never run out of runs.

Conditions vary greatly between the different locations of course the Monashee and Adamant ranges are very forested, so are good if tree-dodging is your thing- but even within the same range there can be a number of distinct challenges to overcome, depending on the season.

Having been established before many parts of Asia had even heard of heliskiing, the packages available are numerous and sophisicated. If you approach any of the bigger companies, you will find them able to offer a package that caters to your particular skill level. Beginner options teach the basics and instill confidence, while private hire is usually available for those who want to maximize flexibility. Skiers wanting to sit out a run can stay in the helicopter, and the time spent waiting for rides LIP the mountain is cut to a bare minimum. For skiers looking to kick back a little and take in more of the scenery, several companies can arrange less vertically-intense slopes or indeed, allow you to fill your day with run after run to rack up huge vertical figures. without the hair-raising drops.

Home base while you are heliskiing in British Columbia, is likely to be the operator’s resort. Being lodge based means reducing the time spent in getting into action and that means a relatively high a large number of runs a significant advantage of door-to helicopter access.

The attention to safety and comfort for all, and the culture of bringing everyone’s skill levels up to make the most of the terrain, have provided the backbone of Canada’s appeal in what is becoming a more mature market. As ever-wider ranges of people take up the sport, this reputation can only grow. It isn’t the most extreme skiing on the planet - though the Monashees are pretty challenging– but it offers solid value for money, with lots of alternates for bad weather days, and plenty of experience and infrastructure behind it.
