Wildlife Tours in Arunachal Pradesh

ARUNACHAL PRADESH: Being close to the Chinese border, this area is sensitive and most of the region is closed to tourism. Permits for the “open areas” can be applied through Indian embassies and high commissions abroad or from the Ministry of Home Affairs (Foreigners Wing), Lok Nayak Bhawan, Khan Market, New Delhi 110003. Allow at least six to eight weeks for the application to be processed. The area has a rich and varied tribal culture with the 650,000 population drawn from 82 mongoloid and Tibeto-Burmese tribes. Namdapha N.P.

Established in 1972, this park and tiger reserve has perhaps the widest diversity of habitats of any of South Asia’s protected areas. It is the only area with three major predators: the tiger, leopard and clouded leopard. The snow leopard is a possible fourth. The park’s 698 sq miles (1807 sq km) rise from 650 feet (200 meters) to 14,800 feet (4500 meters) above mean sea level and the forest ranges from wet evergreen forest at the lower levels through mixed deciduous forest to temperate alpine forest at the upper reaches. Three major rivers drain the area and run into the Noa- Dehing river and then the Brahmaputra. The diverse habitats and local climates hold a fascinating mix of Indo-Burmese, Indo- Chinese and Himalayan wildlife. The mammals include gaur, goral, takin, musk deer, Hoolock gibbon, slow loris, binturong and red panda, apart from the major predators. Hornbills and pheasants are among the great range of birds. Access to the area is difficult and this has helped keep much of it unspoilt. ft is important to Project Tiger as the northeasternmost limit to the Indian tiger’s range. The area is a proposed biosphere reserve and extensions are planned.
