Description of site: Located on the outerside of Mahadev gate in Bhuj town, Hamirsar tank is surrounded by the high stone walls of an ancient fort. Fresh water drains during June-September. The tank’s catchment area is about 18 sq km. Its water capacity is about 3300 million litres. The maximum depth of water in the the tank is 9 m and the minimum 2 m. Kachchh district, faces drought every two years. When the rains fail, the tank dries up completely
Climatic conditions: Average annual temperatures range from a maximum of 44°C to a minimum of 6°C. The climate is tropical monsoon with an average rainfall of 250 mm. The area is influenced by the northeast monsoon and associated cyclonic storms
Principal vegetation: A few neem trees and two old banyan trees grow on the periphery of the tank

Disturbances and threats: The tank is under threat of excessive pumping of water to maintain private gardens along its bank. Motor boats are polluting the tank water
Economic and social values: The tank is used by local people for swimming, fishing, bathing and washing purposes. It is also utilised for watering private gardens and for recreational purposes (sailing)
Fauna: Important habitat for resident and migratory waterfowl such as Anas poecilorhyncha, Aythya ferina, and Anas clypeata. When the water recedes several waders such as Charadrius mongolus, Tringa totanus, Charadrius dubius, and Tringa hypoleucos are seen. In 1983, Larus ridibrundus (30), Phoenicopterus Tuber, and Pekcanus onocrotalus visited tOhis area. During the dry season, rare birds such as the red-necked phalarope (2) and white-tailed lapwing (91) were observed. There is a nesting colony of cattle egrets on the banyan trees where over 50 nests are seen each year. Earlier, marsh crocodiles were hunted in the tank
